Notes from my first month with a V60
Starting this blog mostly as a notebook, since my phone notes app is a mess of half-written recipes with no dates on them.
Bought a plastic V60 02 and a pack of filters. Started with the most common recipe I could find online: 15 g coffee, 250 g water, 2:30–3:00 total. My first week of cups were all sour and thin. Turns out the pre-ground coffee I bought was ground for a cafetiere and way too coarse, so the water ran straight through.
Things I learned this month, in no particular order:
- Rinse the paper filter with hot water first. It does taste like paper otherwise.
- A cheap kitchen scale with a 0.1 g display is enough. You don't need the one with a built-in timer.
- A gooseneck kettle helps, but you can make a decent cup pouring from a normal kettle if you go slowly.
- Fresh beans from a local roaster are a different drink from supermarket bags. Not always better, but different.
Next thing to buy is a grinder. Everyone says it's the most important piece and I'm starting to believe them.
